This video is about the history behind Charlottesville, Virginia, particularly the monuments on the University of Virginia campus. In this video my sister (Juliet Matara) and I (Harlow Matara) visit the Monument of Enslaved Laborers in remembrance of enslaved African Americans and their families. As someone of African descendants ourselves, it's interesting to see the timeline of events on the monument, as well as the fact that Charlottesville is taking accountability for it’s tragic past. Another monument we visited is the Rotunda, a library constructed over Thomas Jefferson’s authority. In front of the Rotunda was the Thomas Jefferson Monument made completely of bronze. The angels on each side symbolize a different moral and the entirety of the statue was built to recognize Jefferson’s writing of the Declaration of Independence.
