This photo is representing the Twin Lights Historical Society in Highlands New Jersey. The two lighthouses were made in 1746 so they could put a whale-oil warning beacon on top of the highlands so New York City would be warned if French Warships were approaching. In 1828, the two lighthouses were finally installed and finished. They both cost around $8,440 with an additional $8,150 for lighting. The lighthouse is installed by many other structures created by Charles Hewitt Smith. Although the lighthouses were very useful they could be improved. In 1838, Matthew C. Perry was on a quest to study European lighthouse lenses. He discovered that they could be better than Americans so he brought them back to America and put the new lenses in the twin lighthouses. Finally after many people settled in the lighthouse from wars and battles, the lighthouse in 2015 went under renovation and had everything redone. Now, the lighthouses are open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10am-4pm in Highlands, New Jersey. The lighthouses are amazing to be at because of their artifacts such as telescopes, old lenses, and pictures. The lighthouses also have a gift shop and many more artifacts to check out. I loved going to the lighthouses and thought it was an amazing experience to see what the lighthouses were like back in the day of the wars.
