       The bridge was built to replace the historic Puente de España (Bridge of Spain), the first bridge built to cross the Pasig River.  Constructed during the Spanish colonial era (opened January 1, 1875), the Puente de Espana was the last incarnation of bridges that span the same location since 1630.
